Wedson Bruno Costa, known as Redbull, was arrested in the municipality of São Gonçalo do Amarante, in Greater Natal, on the morning of this Monday (20). He is suspected of the death of criminal police officer Carlos Eduardo Nazário, 53, last Friday (17).
According to police, the victim was off duty when two men on a motorcycle fired several shots. Nazário was hit by at least five shots. He was rescued to a hospital, but he couldn’t resist the injuries.
Police officers from the Homicide and Personal Protection Division (DHPP) also seized a pistol, ammunition, and a precision scale and other objects from the suspect.
Since the escalation of attacks in several cities in Rio Grande do Norte began last Tuesday (14), the Secretariat of Public Security reported that 135 suspects were arrested.
Of these, three were teenagers, who were apprehended, and 14 fugitives from justice were recaptured.
In addition, 38 firearms and 106 explosive devices were seized, along with money, ammunition, cars and drugs.
At least ten prisoners considered dangerous were transferred to federal penitentiaries, with maximum security.
The climate of uncertainty led the US Embassy in Brazil to recommend US officials and citizens to avoid visiting Rio Grande do Norte.
Federal government action
The Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, is in the state to help combat criminal attacks.
This Monday, he meets with the governor, Fátima Bezerra, and other authorities. A meeting is also scheduled with members of the Public Security and Social Defense Integrated Management Office.
Dino arrived on Sunday night (19) and declared full support from the federal government to contain the security crisis. The minister announced the immediate sending of funds already made available by the portfolio for the increase of the Public Security structure of the state.
However, according to him, the request for the Guarantee of Law and Order (GLO), with possible action by the Armed Forces, will only occur in the event of a total collapse of the state and federal security forces – which, for the time being, does not happen.
On Sunday, the Secretariat for Public Security counted seven criminal actions, a 93% reduction in occurrences related to acts compared to last Tuesday (14), when the attacks began.
The decrease occurred after the reinforcement of almost 500 men from the National Force and from other states.
The minister highlighted the reduction in the number of cases. According to him, there is no limit to the federal government’s support for the state, until the situation is completely controlled.
