Police arrest suspects involved in shooting that killed university student in Rio

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro arrested this Monday (29) two individuals suspected of having participated in the shooting that resulted in the death of a student at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) earlier this month in Seropédica, in Baixada Fluminense.

In the operation that ended with the duo's arrest, two 762 caliber rifles, a grenade, 11 rifle magazines, more than 100 rifle ammunition, radio communicators, a car with a cloned license plate and two bulletproof vests were seized.

The prisoners were identified as Jefferson Araújo dos Santos, known as Chica, and Patrick Wallace Alves Monteiro, PTK. According to the Civil Police, Jefferson is the leader of a militia called Bonde do Chica, which operates in Seropédica. Patrick would be his right-hand man.

The police report that Bonde do Chica allied himself with drug traffickers from the Third Comando Puro (TCP) faction, giving rise to a drug militia. The group took control of the militia operating in Seropédica after militia member Tauã de Oliveira Francisco, the Tubarão, was killed by police earlier this year.

Jefferson and Patrick had been monitored by the police since the shooting that resulted in the university student's death.

“Investigations showed that both participated in the shooting, caused by two groups of rival criminals who clashed at the Seropédica Center. At the time, in addition to the student, two children were also hit, rescued and survived. During the investigations, three criminals have already been arrested and others have already been identified”, says the Civil Police.

The police report that, during this Monday's operation, the two individuals tried to escape by jumping to their neighbors' house, but were captured.
