Police arrest three men in the death of Moïse Kabamgabe in Rio de Janeiro

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro arrested, this Tuesday (1st), three men suspected of the murder of 24-year-old Congolese Moïse Kabamgabe.

Eight people were heard by the Homicide Police Station in the state capital. One of those involved confessed to the murder. The second was hidden and the third had no information released.

Moïse was attacked with a wooden bar at a kiosk in Barra da Tijuca, on the west side of Rio. The object was located and seized near the place where the body was found. A video from the kiosk’s security cameras shows the moment of the assault. According to family members, the young man worked for two days at the place and went to collect his payment.

There were several minutes of violence, even when the Congolese was unconscious. The aggressors had their temporary arrest (with an established term) requested to the Justice today and must answer for doubly qualified homicide.

Defense lawyers for the kiosk owner were at the 16th Police Station in Barra. According to the defense and police, the owner was not at the scene at the time of the crime. Only one employee did night work.

Defenders also said that the attackers do not work at the kiosk and do not provide security for the site and that there is no history of debt collection, as the Congolese would not have provided services in recent weeks. Police said the owner is cooperating with the investigation.

The death of Moïse Kabagambe generated great repercussions on social networks. Rio Governor Cláudio Castro (PL) said: “The murder of Congolese Moïse Kabagambe will not go unpunished. The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro is identifying the authors of this barbarity. Let’s arrest these criminals and give an answer to the family and society. The Victim Assistance Secretariat will look for relatives to provide the necessary support.”

The mayor of Rio Eduardo Paes (PSD) also expressed himself on the networks: “the murder of Moïse Kabagambe is unacceptable and revolting. I am sure that the police authorities will act with the priority and rigor necessary to bring us the necessary clarifications and punish those responsible. The mayor is following the case. Paes met with the victim’s mother and two brothers at the city hall’s office.”
