Police arrest three people after finding shielding of radioactive materials in SP

All the shielding of the radioactive material that had been stolen last Sunday (30) was found on Saturday night (6) by the Civil Police in the Parque do Carmo neighborhood, in the east zone of São Paulo.

According to the Public Security Department (SSP), police officers from the 53rd DP (Parque do Carmo) arrested three people for receiving and possessing nuclear material. According to the police, the incident ended around midnight.

The National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) informed the CNN that, after an analysis by the Institute of Energy and Nuclear Research, the five lead cylinders found correspond to the five generators that were missing.

The five columns containing radioactive material have not yet been found. According to CNEN, the four Molybdenum-99 columns do not pose a risk, as they have already been depleted. However, the Germanium-68 material requires greater care, as it is active.

The Ge-68 nucleus is used for the generation of the radiopharmaceutical Gallium-68, which is used in nuclear medicine.

CNEN commissioned the Institute of Radioprotection and Dosimetry (IRD), the organization’s scientific unit, to analyze the potential risks of radioactive columns.

The institute has already stated that none of the radioactive substances pose a worrying risk, even if handled improperly. The study is expected to be released this Sunday (7).

The 53°DP (Parque do Carmo) continues to investigate the case.
