Police ask for another 30 days to complete investigation into rockfall in MG

The Civil Police of Minas Gerais asked the Justice for another 30 days to complete the investigation that investigates the causes of the fall of a rock in a lake in the city of Capitólio, a city located about 280 kilometers from the capital Belo Horizonte.

On January 8, around 11:50 am, a rock collapsed in a canyon and hit a speedboat that was in Furnas lake. In all, ten people died and 32 were injured. The place is a well-known tourist spot and, at the time of the accident, several boats were there.

wanted by CNNDeputy Marcos Pimenta, responsible for the investigations, stated that the request for an extension of the investigation is due to the “complexity of the facts and the need to wait for the conclusion of the reports, as well as to scrutinize the vast documentation”.

Pimenta also said that, so far, the police investigation already has 50 hearings, including witnesses, tourists, entrepreneurs and engineers. “Requests for technical information from various bodies are also present in the inquiry. It is also worth noting that a group of experts from the Civil Police of Minas Gerais was present in the region and carried out technical work, which is currently being concluded”, added the delegate.

The tragedy in Capitólio generated great repercussions, including international ones. Images made by tourists that went viral on social media showed the moment the stone fell on the boats.

Two days after the accident, the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), stated that the Capitólio region had never suffered anything like it and that he ordered a technical analysis by geologists and experts to determine possible future risks, as well as what additional precautions will be required.
