The Mexican navy training ship that hit the bottom of the Brooklyn bridge on Saturday night (17) probably suffered a “mechanical problem” that made the captain lose his propulsion, police said at a news conference.
“The captain who maneuvered the ship lost the propulsion of the ship,” Chief Wilson Arambles of the New York Police Special Operations Department told Saturday night.
Araboles added that there were “some mechanical problems” that “probably” made the ship, Cuauhtitem, collided with the bridge.
The authorities warned that the information provided is preliminary and subject to changes. The National Transport Security Council is conducting an investigation into what happened.
The Cuauhtemoc was leaving New York and sailing toward Iceland when it hit the bottom of the bridge.
Araboles said several sailors were in the ship’s masts and were injured in the incident.
