The São Paulo Civil Police arrested a 24-year-old man in the act last Thursday (23) suspected of carrying out telephone scams from a center located in an apartment in the west zone of the capital of São Paulo.
According to investigations, the “coup center” was installed on the 19th floor of a building located in the Morumbi neighborhood and emitted signals from an antenna on the balcony. This signal sent SMS messages with fraudulent content.
The messages presented false alerts, such as unauthorized purchases, banking information, travel mile points and irregularities in the driver’s license (CNH).
The messages contained a telephone number for the victim to call, with the argument that this channel would be intended to resolve the alleged irregularity. During the conversation, the victims thought they were speaking directly to the company responsible for the service and ended up providing bank details to the criminals.
The scam also worked through malicious links that, when clicked, could install some type of virus on the device, allowing the suspects to access the victims’ cell phone data.
The investigations began after the arrest of a 22-year-old man in July last year, who was detained with several electronic devices installed in a vehicle that was traveling through the city’s streets. The devices were used to send SMS messages with false links. The stolen amounts were deposited into the suspect’s girlfriend’s account.
In a note, the São Paulo State Traffic Department (Detran-SP) highlighted that “suspension and revocation notifications are sent exclusively by letter. The notifications now have a QR Code, which takes the reader to the municipality’s portal, where the driver, in addition to consulting details of the process, can present a defense.”
The case was registered as criminal association, embezzlement, invasion of a computer device, execution of a search and seizure warrant, and location and seizure of an object in the 42nd DP (Parque São Lucas).
