Police discover tunnel near the largest prison in MT and arrest 12 people

The Management for Combating Organized Crime (GCCO) of Mato Grosso discovered that a tunnel was being built in a house, heading towards the largest penitentiary in the state, in Cuiabá. Twelve people were arrested in the act and sent to the central building of the complex with a high degree of danger.

The police arrived at the excavation site after receiving information on Dial Denunciation 197. There, they surprised a group of ten men and two women who were working on the excavation.

The house housed several bags of sand and other materials taken from the tunnel, which was 30 meters long. Shovels, pickaxes and other tools were also seized, as well as a water reservoir and basic food baskets.

The technical police were at the house carrying out the expertise and the State Civil Defense will go to the site to make security and carry out the measurement of the excavated section. The police had not yet entered the tunnel, as it was not yet possible to establish security conditions.

According to delegate Vitor Teixeira, who is in charge of the investigations, the group had been in the house for 20 days. The property was rented by a master builder who was part of the criminal organization, and would be responsible for organizing and coordinating the opening of the tunnel.

The men were from Piauí, and they had knowledge of tunneling, due to their experience in mining work. Some of them have a history with the police. They worked without leaving the house, so as not to arouse suspicion, and they stored all the material taken from the tunnel in a compartment.

While the ten men did the excavation, the two women, a teenager and an adult, took care of the group’s food.

GCCO will continue investigations, looking for those responsible for hiring the workers and others involved in the criminal action.
