Police do not rule out homicide in case of elderly kept dead by children

Despite the advanced age, the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police are investigating if Dario Antonio Raffaele d’Ottavio, 88, died naturally or had the death designed by their own children who kept their body indoors for about six months, allegedly to continue receiving its financial benefits.

Marcelo Marchese d’Ottavio and Tania Conceição Marchese d’Ottavio were arrested on Wednesday (21) after police from the 37th DP (Governor Island) to find the corpse in an advanced state of decomposition in one of the family’s residence rooms on Governor Island, north of Rio.

In the property, the agents also identified several new goods, which reinforced the suspicion that the brothers had been using resources from the deceased father.

“Now we will analyze the causes of death and precise at the very moment when the death happened, and also to verify if there was a murder or if this death took place from a morbid state or a disease,” said Deputy Felipe Santoro, head of the 37th Police Station.

During the approach, Marcelo resisted the police action and even assaulted one of the agents. Tania tried to prevent her brother’s arrest and also invested against the police. Both were caught in the act for corpse, resistance and bodily injury crimes.

Dario’s body was sent to the Forensic Medical Institute (IML), where he will undergo examinations that must indicate the cause and approximate date of death. Police are awaiting expert reports to advance the investigation line. Meanwhile, the brothers remain hospitalized under medical observation, with signs of possible psychological disorders. Subsequently, they will be sent to a custody hearing at the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice.
