The Civil Police are investigating whether the lack of a portable defibrillator contributed to the death of Dayane de Jesus, 22. UFRJ’s international relations student was ill while exercising on Tuesday night (20) at a gym in Copacabana, in the south of Rio.
According to the investigation, the equipment was not available on site. A doctor who also trained at the gym tried to help the young woman, requested the defibrillator, but was informed that the gym did not have the device. Safety cameras images recorded the moment when regulars try to provide first aid, but Dayane could not resist.
“We will find out if there is a relationship between the death of the young woman and a possible omission by the academy, which, as we found, did not have a portable defibrillator on site, equipment that is mandatory by law. We will analyze whether this absence configured negligence and if contributed to the tragic outcome,” said Deputy Angelo Lages, holder of the Copacabana Police Station (12th DP).
In addition to analyzing the gym’s conduct, the Civil Police also investigates whether Dayane had a history of heart problems. The inquiry is awaiting the report of the Forensic Medical Institute (IML) to point out the cause of death and clarify whether any pre -existing factor may have contributed to the sudden illness.
The Form Fitness Academy, where the case happened, was banned by the Civil Police on Wednesday (21).
Since 2021, a state law has forced academies and training centers to provide portable and professional defibrillators trained to work in emergency situations. Municipal legislation, sanctioned in 2022, reinforces this requirement within the limits of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Failure to comply with these rules can generate sanctions, including fines and other administrative penalties.
On the night of Wednesday (21), the gym published a note on social networks:
“The direction of fitness form is publicly publicizing its deep regret for the death of one of our students, which occurred on the gym premises yesterday. In respect to the memory of the deceased student, his family and friends, and in mind the mourning of our entire community, we inform you that the academy will remain closed throughout May 22/22/2025.
We count on the understanding of all in this moment of pain and solidarity. ”
The CNN report sought the gym, but so far no return beyond the note published on social networks.
