The Civil Police identified about thirty people who were anesthetized by Giovanni Quintella Bezerra, 31, in different hospital units. The investigation continues to search the list of all the patients that were seen by the doctor in procedures carried out since April, when he started to work as an anesthesiologist, to try to find other reports of abuse.
“We need to investigate. First, to do a triage, to know what type of procedure was, what happened. And then we go deeper”, explained the delegate responsible for the case, Bárbara Lomba.
So far, the delegate believes that six women have been raped by the anesthesiologist. Among them, the one that appears in the video that caught Bezerra’s action last Sunday (10). The doctor is treated by investigators as a serial criminal.
Of these possible victims, three identified Giovanni Bezerra and two are expected to testify this Thursday (14), at the Specialized Police Station for Assistance to Women in São João de Meriti, in Baixada Fluminense. Both had cesarean sections on the same day the video was recorded and would also have been sedated after the baby was born, at the time the suturing begins, the final part of the surgery.
“This is already confirmed, that there was sedation. And the information we already had, from the nursing team, about the other two surgeries. The procedures were similar,” said the delegate.
In general, in cesarean sections, local anesthesia is indicated, unless there is a reason for sedation, such as the mother being nervous, agitated or if there has been a complication in the procedure.
The option to dope the victims caught the attention of the nursing team, who decided to hide a cell phone and record the entire delivery of the third pregnant woman. “With all these pieces reconciled, everything indicates that the sedation was used for the practice of rape”, concluded Lomba.
Police are still waiting to hear from the victim who appears in the act and her husband by Friday (15). According to the testimonies already heard, the child’s father was present until the baby’s birth. The abuse happened after he left the operating room with the child.
In order not to expose the couple even more, this hearing can take place outside the police headquarters. The expectation is that it will be this week, since the investigation has ten days after opening to conclude, since the doctor was arrested in the act. The arrest was later converted into preventive by the Justice.
The victim who appears in the images left the hospital and returned to breastfeed the baby, after receiving the medicines given to victims of abuse. She spoke to the sheriff on the phone and was upset when she learned of the rape.
“She is very psychologically shaken. She cried with me on the phone, but said that she is able to speak, that she will testify. She is fine, the son is fine. She went back to breastfeeding now because she was unable to do so soon after,” revealed Lomba.
The State Department of Health (SES) reported that it is collaborating with the investigations, as well as all hospitals, public and private, where the doctor worked. Some units where the accused has accreditation as a service provider are canceling the link.
The Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro reported that it has provisionally suspended Giovanni Quintella Bezerra from the medical staff. As a result, he is prevented from practicing medicine throughout the country, until the end of the process, which may permanently revoke the registration.
Cremerj issued a request for clarification to the suspect, who has a period of fifteen days to provide the requested information.
Giovanni Quintela Bezerra is detained, isolated, in a cell at the Bangu 8 prison, in the Gericinó Penitentiary Complex, in the west of the capital.
According to the delegate, the doctor remains without a lawyer appointed in the investigation.
New protocols
The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, said that the State Department of Health is studying new protocols, after the rape case at the Hospital da Mulher Heloneida Studart, in São João de Meriti, in Baixada Fluminense.
“It was a totally extraordinary situation. Then it has to do with the medical staff, what can have a camera, what can’t. It’s no use because this happened to fill cameras everywhere. It is not how it works. But a form of protocol is already being studied by the Health Department, a way to better train professionals”, said the governor.
Without detailing what those protocols would be, Castro said that the case has to serve as an example to improve safety in hospitals. “It’s a situation that shocks all of us, shocks the society of Rio de Janeiro,” said the governor, noting that the doctor’s case is isolated.
“This is not a professional thing. This is the stuff of a monster, who was here and made an eyesore. So we cannot, in any way, think that this is a network thing, that it happens. No: this is an extraordinary fact, but it has to serve, yes, so that we can fight this and other cases, other forms of bad deeds ”, he said.
The governor was in the early afternoon at the unit where the crime was reported to talk to the direction of the hospital and the medical team that caught the action of the anesthesiologist, last Sunday (10).
