Police in Rio Grande do Sul investigate torture after theft of picanha in supermarket

The Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul is investigating a case of torture in a supermarket in the city of Canoas, in the metropolitan region of the capital Porto Alegre.

Security camera footage from a unit of the Unisuper supermarket chain showed two men being beaten by security guards after an attempt to steal a piece of picanha.

Cameras showed a man being taken by security guards to the supermarket’s warehouse, where he suffered aggression, shortly after being seen hiding the meat inside his pants.

The internal circuit captured the exact moment of the torture, when the robbery suspect, sitting on the floor, is intimidated by the employees. A second man was taken to the warehouse and, seated, the two were brutally attacked – including the use of various tools.

After the assaults ended, the attacking security guards posed for a photo together in the warehouse.

According to the police investigation, they asked for the payment of a ransom and only released the victims after the son of one of the victims transferred a sum.

Also according to the police, the episode happened on October 12. The authorities only found out about the occurrence two days later – when a man with severe fractures on his face was admitted to a hospital in Porto Alegre. He was in a coma.

On October 17, police officers went to the supermarket and asked for security cameras, but while they were received by an employee, another tried to hide the evidence of the crime by erasing the data from the computer.

The Civil Police claims that the four involved reported conflicting versions and the dissemination of images is intended to help identify the participants.

In a note, the Unisuper supermarket chain said it ended the outsourced contract with the company “Glock Security” and all employees involved were dismissed. The supermarket also stated that it has started the work of reviewing all safety protocols and employee conduct.
