The civil police are investigating whether a crime caused a fire that hit around 30 wooden houses, on Saturday afternoon (20), in the Bairro do Céu community, in the south of Manaus. A humanitarian aid operation by the Amazonas government has already helped at least 110 families living there.
According to the Amazonas Military Fire Department (CBMAM), a 52-year-old man was taken to the Emergency Service in the São Raimundo neighborhood and, after undergoing medical care, was under observation and released.
The place that was hit by the flames is difficult to access. The corporation also reported that 12 vehicles with 42 firefighters were deployed to respond to the incident yesterday.
In view of what happened, the Civil Police stated that they called in the expertise of the Criminalistics Institute (IC), of the Public Security Secretariat (SSP-AM), to determine whether the fire was accidental or criminal. The investigations will be coordinated by the 24th Integrated Police District (DIP).
The Government of Amazonas set up a humanitarian aid operation for those affected in the center of Manaus, where at least 110 families have already been helped, each with around 4 people. The task force brings together state bodies such as Civil Defense, the Fire Department and the State Department of Health (SES).
According to the secretary of the Special Projects Management Unit (UGPE), Marcellus Campêlo, the objective of Operation Bairro do Céu, which also has the support of the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), is to provide assistance to homeless families , provide shelter and documentation for those who lost all their belongings, as well as food, water and hygiene items.
The secretary of the State Secretariat for Social Assistance (Seas) and Human Rights and Citizenship (Sejusc), Jussara Pedrosa, stated that those who do not have relatives' homes to go to will be sent to shelters.
The Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Mocidade Independente de Aparecida is sheltering families in a block and offering support to the victims. The association is also mobilizing efforts to collect clothes, shoes and food for those affected.
