Police investigate episode of racism against young people in a shopping mall store in Rio

Two teenagers and an 18-year-old girl report a case of racism, which allegedly happened inside the O Boticário store, in Bangu Shopping, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro. The case took place on November 20, Black Awareness Day.

According to the police report registered by the three, the young people entered the O Boticário store and took a long time to be served. They report that, after a few minutes, they were approached by a saleswoman who said that the store was very crowded and that they should leave.

After the incident, a white couple entered the store and were promptly attended to by the saleswoman. The young woman returned to the store, made a purchase and complained to another employee about what had happened. The salesperson apologized for what happened on behalf of the store.

“A day that should have been very pleasant with my friends, turned sad and revolting. Once again, there is nothing to celebrate on Black Awareness Day”, wrote the teenager on her social network.

“We decided to take this case to the police so that our young people believe that it is worth fighting for justice and their rights”, says Elma Campos Fortunato dos Santos, mother of one of the teenagers who reported the case of racism against her and her two friends .

The case is being investigated by the Racism and Intolerance Crimes Office (Decradi).

A CNN contacted the O Boticário press office and is awaiting a response.
