Police investigate how Finnish Prime Minister’s breakfasts were paid for

A preliminary investigation, to determine whether the expenditure tabled by the Prime Minister, Sanaa Marin, for her breakfasts with her family were legal (or not), started its Police on Friday 28 May Φινλανδίας.

The young head of the center-left government has been facing a controversy since the Iltalehti newspaper revealed on Tuesday (25/05) that she was reimbursed EUR 300 per month for the cost of her family meals; while residing in the official residence of Kesäranta.

In the face of criticism, the 35-year-old prime minister replied that her predecessors also benefited from such an expense. “I did not seek to take advantage of this advantage as prime minister, nor was I involved in the decision,” she assured Twitter today.

Experts, referred to by the Finnish media, point out that The use of state funds to cover the prime ministers’ breakfasts could be contrary to the law of the land.

“Some meals were paid to the prime minister, even if the wording of the law on ministerial salaries does not seem to allow this,” the police explained in a press release, according to what APE-MPE reports.

According to Police Chief Teemu Jokinen, the research will focus, however, on the decisions taken by those in charge, in Marin’s office, and “is in no way connected to the prime minister and her official activities”.

Two weeks before the local elections, the Prime Minister welcomed the start of the investigation and announced that she would refuse to pay these expenses during it.

In power since December 2019, the head of the Finnish government enjoys increased public support due to the management of the Covid-19 epidemic in the country.

However, opinion polls for the June 13 municipal elections show a rise in opposition, especially to the far-right Finnish Party.
