The Civil Police launched an investigation to investigate the possible crime of torture against a man in a supermarket in Bauru, in the interior of São Paulo, who was attacked after being accused of stealing a chocolate. The case was investigated only as injury and factual disputes.
The police investigation identified 8 security guards who appear in the images attacking the client. If convicted, those involved could face up to eight years in prison.
In a statement, the Public Security Secretariat of São Paulo, informed that hearings have already been held and the videos of the aggressions have been forwarded to the expert.
The Confiança supermarket chain, where the attacks took place, is not being investigated, according to Ricardo Braviera, the client’s lawyer.
“The company vehemently repudiates any type of violence, considers the act extremely serious, unacceptable and that goes against all of its protocols and values. We inform you that the employees involved were promptly dismissed from their duties and we continue to cooperate with the investigations. We reaffirm our commitment to the safety of all customers and employees, working intensively to train safety and prevention teams, so that episodes like this never happen again”, says a statement from the supermarket.

The case took place on June 7. Images from internal market cameras show security guards punching and kicking the man.
In his statement to the police, the man reported that he bought beer, wine, paper towels and two chocolates. Along with the chocolates, he also put another bonbon in his pocket, which he forgot to pay for.
From the CCTV footage, it is possible to see that he was approached by security guards after having gone through the cashier and paid for the products. The attacks also began in the fruit and vegetable sector of the establishment.
From there, the man was taken to a room, where the attacks continued. He said that the security guards cursed him with terms like “noia” and “cracudo thief”.
In the incident report, the man says that while still in the market room, the police alerted the security guards that they had acted incorrectly.
“I stayed there until the Military Police arrived, who warned the security guards that they shouldn’t have acted that way”.
The supermarket customer was taken to the police station. At the time, the victim’s lawyer said that he had to be sent to an Emergency Room due to the attacks.
