The São Paulo police investigate the death of Lourivaldo Ferreira Silva Nepomuceno 35, which occurred on Tuesday morning (6) at Campo Limpo Station of the 5-Lilac Metro line.
The incident, which took place around 8:05 am, peak time in São Paulo public transport, shocked passengers and raised security questions at the stations.
According to information from Public Security Secretariat the victim was found lying next to the subway tracks.
Images from the station’s monitoring cameras show the moment when passengers enter the train, followed by closing the doors. When the subway departs, you can see people’s despair on the platform.
Witnesses reported that Lourivaldo was arrested among the safety door and the train platform being dragged then.
The case was registered as an accidental death and is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Station.
Security warnings
There are disagreements in the testimonies about the operation of security systems at the time of the accident.
While some witnesses claim not to hear the beep that warns of the closing of the doors, others report that Lourivaldo had tried to enter the train when the signal had already been emitted and the doors were closing.
THE Via mobility the concessionaire that manages the 5-lilac line, said that even after the sound and luminous warnings, the passenger tried to enter the train and was arrested between the doors.
The company regretted the episode and stressed that the platforms have sound, luminous warnings, speaker messages, yellow safety signal and motion sensors at the wagon doors.
Lourivaldo’s body was sent to the West Forensic Medical Institute (IML) and should be released to family members on the morning of Wednesday (7). An expertise will be carried out to investigate the precise causes of the accident.
The victim’s father reported that Lourivaldo leaves his wife and three children, two of them small.
He was about to graduate in college this year and was described as a present father, who “makes a bottle, bathe, change diaper.” The family, which planned a barbecue to celebrate the birthdays of their father and son in the coming days, now faces mourning for sudden loss.
