Police make 1st arrest with the help of facial recognition cameras at Rio bus station

The Military Police carried out this Wednesday (26) the first arrest using facial recognition cameras at Rio de Janeiro bus station . According to the corporation, the arrest was made after a system issued an alert indicating the suspect, who was approached.

The individual, who had an open arrest warrant for drug trafficking, was taken to the 4th DP (Center).

According to the PM, the corporation’s Video Surveillance and Facial Recognition System is still in the process of being installed at the bus station . In total, 45 cameras will monitor the terminal.

The corporation will have full-time access to images of movement at the bus station.

In Rio, the facial recognition system was implemented on New Year’s Eve and has already helped the PM make 200 arrests in the city.

Of the 200 arrests, almost 50% were due to non-payment of child support. Robbery (38), drug trafficking (16), theft (11) and homicide (10) were the other most recorded and solved incidents.
