Police officer accused of killing PT party in Foz do Iguaçu will go to popular jury

Police officer Jorge Guaranho will be submitted to a popular jury for the indictment of the death of PT treasurer and municipal guard Marcelo Arruda. The decision is by Judge Gustavo Germano Arguello, issued this Thursday (1st), after a request from the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The request for revocation of prison made by Guaranho’s defense was also denied. The judge stated that he must remain in custody to “guarantee public order” and due to the seriousness of the alleged crime committed.

THE CNN got in touch with Guaranho’s defense, but did not get a response until the last update of this article. There is no date for the Jury Court to take place.

Arruda was killed by Garanho, a supporter of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), at his own birthday party, in Foz do Iguaçu, with a theme in honor of the PT and former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

According to the Public Ministry, the crime was politically motivated, with “antagonistic party-political preferences”.

The Prosecution claims that Guaranho shot Arruda when he was already on the ground, saying “a petista will die everything [sic]”.The complaint goes in the opposite direction to the investigation by the Civil Police of Paraná, which ruled out, last Friday (15), that there was political motivation.

Arruda’s lawyers, in turn, stated that the investigations would show that the case happened because of political divergence.
