Police officer injured in knife attack in Cannes, perpetrator ‘neutralized’

A police officer at the helm of a patrol car was injured this morning when he was attacked with a knife in front of the Cannes police station in southeastern France by a man who said he had committed the act “in the name of the prophet”, sources close to law enforcement told AFP. order.

According to Interior Minister Geral Darmanen, the most prevalent scenario is that of “terrorist” action.

The sources of the French Agency clarified that the policeman “was saved thanks to the fact that he was wearing a bulletproof vest”, as the perpetrator stabbed him “at the height of the chest”.

Through Twitter, Interior Minister Darmanen said he was going to the scene of the attack “immediately”, expressing “all his support” to police and the city of Cannes, on the French Riviera.

BFMTV, citing its own sources close to law enforcement, said earlier that the perpetrator opened the door of a patrol car parked in front of the police station and stabbed the man in the driver’s seat. He then tried to stab a second police officer inside the vehicle while making the round of the vehicle, but a third police officer inside the car shot him, seriously injuring him.

The attack took place around 06:30 (local time; 07:30 Greek time).

No information on the identity of the perpetrator has been given by the police so far.

The attack came as French concerns about terrorism and violent crime may play a role in the run-up to the 2022 presidential election.
