Police officer killed during operation in Rio’s northern zone

Captain of the 3rd Battalion of the Military Police (Méier), Rafael Galvão da Costa died in a police operation carried out in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro, on the morning of this Wednesday (3).

The State Secretariat of the PM informed the CNN that the agent was injured during the action in the Morro do Urubu community, in Pilares. The soldier was taken to the Salgado Filho Hospital while still alive, but did not survive his injuries.

The operation aimed to arrest criminals involved in vehicle and cargo theft, in addition to preventing the participation of other offenders in territorial disputes between criminal factions.

During the action, the 3rd BPM team was patrolling Morro do Urubu when it was attacked with gunfire by armed men.

Rafael Galvão da Costa was 41 years old and joined the Military Police in 2009. He leaves behind a wife and two children. The time and place of the officer’s burial have not yet been released.
