A police officer was seriously injured in a knife attack in Paris’ Champs Elysees shopping district on Thursday (18), local police chief Laurent Nunez said.
This comes after a security guard at a boutique called the police after spotting a man who appeared to be carrying a knife.
The attacker was also seriously injured, according to Nunez.
France is on the highest security alert as it prepares to welcome millions of visitors, athletes and world leaders for the Summer Olympics, which begin on July 26.
Paris police have urged people to avoid the Champs Elysees area. Television footage showed armed officers on the famous avenue.
The attack was the latest in a series of unrelated security incidents in the French capital this week.
A soldier was stabbed and injured by a man at a railway station on Monday. Authorities are also investigating whether a man who rammed a car into a cafe terrace on Wednesday night did so on purpose.
