The military police officer who killed eight-time jiu-jitsu world champion Leandro Lo this weekend in São Paulo had already been convicted, in 2021, of assault and contempt of police officers after being involved in a disagreement at a nightclub. The case happened in 2017.
On the occasion, on October 27, 2017, Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozo was off duty at the nightclub “The Week”. After getting involved in a fight, the PM was called, around 4:20 am.
According to the sentence, he was “nervous and excited, making the work of the military difficult”. When one of the agents stretched his arm to keep him at a distance, Velozo punched his arm and tried to hit him in the face.
Another part of the sentence also highlights that the PM was “visibly altered and had an alcoholic odor”. He was celebrating, along with a cousin, the family member’s admission to the Military Police.
The policeman reportedly tried to defend his cousin from seven other people who were trying to attack him. Everyone was kicked out of the nightclub, and while Velozo was talking to the security guards, a first car arrived. The soldier attacked was in a second vehicle and was in charge of the occurrence.
Henrique Velozo was unanimously accused and sentenced of “violence against an inferior” and “contempt of military personnel” in the Military Justice Court of the State of São Paulo (TJM-SP) to nine months in prison in an open regime.
Velozo’s defense was not found by the CNN to comment on the matter.
Death of Leandro Lo
São Paulo police investigate the murder of eight-time jiu-jitsu world champion Leandro Lo, who was shot in the head during a concert over the weekend. The fighter was confirmed brain dead on Sunday (7).
According to police information, Lo would have been involved in an argument at Clube Sírio, in the south of São Paulo, last Saturday night (6). He then allegedly overthrew the military police officer Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozo, who would have provoked him. Velozo would then have left the place and returned shooting.
In addition to firing the shots, the policeman would have kicked the athlete twice, when he was already unconscious on the ground, and left the scene.
Henrique Velozo presented himself to the Military Police Internal Affairs on Sunday (7), being taken to a police station to give a statement. He must serve a 30-day temporary detention at the Romão Gomes prison in São Paulo.
An internal investigation was opened to investigate the conduct of the police officer, as well as an investigation of completed murder.
