Police operation in Rio de Janeiro has 13 deaths and leaves 19 schools closed

Thirteen people died and five were injured during an operation with the Military, Federal and Federal Highway police in Vila Cruzeiro and Alemão, two of the largest favela complexes in Rio de Janeiro. As a result of the shootings during the incursion into the communities, 19 schools were closed.

The direction of the Getúlio Vargas State Hospital confirmed that 17 of the thirteen victims were admitted to the unit. The death of a woman, hit by a stray bullet while walking down the street is not included in the emergency report released by the unit.

The intervention began early on Tuesday morning (24). An intense clash was recorded in the region. Police aircraft fly over the site.

According to information from the Municipal Secretary of Education of Rio de Janeiro (SME), as a result of the operation, which resulted in intense shootings throughout the morning, 19 schools in the region had to be closed and will provide care remotely.

The SME was unable to inform how many students were harmed by the closing of these teaching units.

So far, according to the State Military Police Department, 11 rifles, four pistols and grenades have been seized, in addition to 16 vehicles (ten motorcycles and six cars) “used by fleeing criminals”.

The final result will be presented at a press conference at the Integrated Command and Control Center (CICC) at the end of the work.
