The Civil Police of Minas Gerais (PCMG), together with the Federal Police, launched operation Suffrage this Friday (4), aiming to combat an electoral fraud scheme in the east of the state.
The action, coordinated by the Integrated Force to Combat Organized Crime (Ficco) in Governador Valadares, focused on the cities of Governador Valadares and Divino das Laranjeiras, executing eight search and seizure warrants.
According to investigations, the criminal group fraudulently transferred around a thousand electoral titles from Governador Valadares and neighboring municipalities to Divino das Laranjeiras between December 2023 and May 2024. This scheme resulted in a significant increase of 25% in the city’s electorate .
The fraud involved the use of falsified proof of residence and offering money to voters in exchange for votes for candidates previously selected for municipal elections.
The Public Electoral Ministry has already requested the immediate suspension of the voting rights of voters involved in the fraudulent scheme.
The suspects face charges of fraudulent voter registration and forgery of documents, crimes that, together, can result in up to 11 years in prison.
