Police reopen investigation into the death of a young man from a stray bullet in Recife

The investigation into the death of Darik Sampaio da Silva, a 13-year-old teenager shot in March by two shots allegedly fired by the Military Police of Pernambuco, was reopened by the Civil Police.

The decision was taken by the Deputy Attorney General’s Office, which recommended that new investigations be carried out, including a reconstruction of the case. This Tuesday (17), the Civil Police of Pernambuco confirmed to the CNN that will carry out the requested steps.

The reassessment of the case occurs after judge Fernanda Moura de Carvalho, from the 1st Court of the Capital Jury Court, rejected the archiving request made by prosecutor Ademilton Carvalho Leitão.

The request for archiving was made on December 4 by the Inquiry Center of the Public Ministry of Pernambuco (MP-PE), which claimed not to have identified the person responsible for the shooting. However, the judge responsible for the case highlighted in the decision that there are still suspects to be investigated.

At the time, the Pernambuco Court of Justice informed the CNN that the judge ordered the case to be sent to the Attorney General for a new analysis.

According to investigations, Darik Sampaio da Silva was hit by two stray bullets while suspects, fleeing in a stolen Chevrolet Tracker vehicle, were pursued by the police on Rua Professora Arcelina Câmara, in the Jordão neighborhood, south of Recife. The teenager, who was a futsal athlete at Sport Club do Recife, died a few hours later due to his injuries.

The Military Police’s initial version indicated that there was an exchange of gunfire, but, during an investigation by the Civil Police, this hypothesis was discarded. It was confirmed that only military police officers fired shots.

However, the Civil Police were unable to identify which of the five PMs involved in the case was responsible for the shots that killed Darik, as the officers refused to participate in the simulated reproduction.

In the document, the judge considered the archiving decision “hasty” and argued that there was still the possibility of the police authority taking further steps to search for “minimum indicative elements” that could help identify the person who fired the shots. For the judge, the investigation presents “a range of possible perpetrators” and not the absence of suspects.
