Police seize 600 kg of cocaine in favelas in the north of Rio

The Civil Police seized a large load of cocaine this Monday (1st) around a group of favelas in the northern part of Rio.

Police officers from the Special Resources Coordination (Core) intercepted, after being chased, a truck with 600 tablets of material identified as cocaine hydrochloride, totaling around 600 kilograms.

According to information from the Civil Police, the agents were in an open operation, between the neighborhoods of Olaria and Penha, in order to investigate information about the arrival of a shipment of weapons in communities in that region.

“At the end of the morning, a small trunk truck was spotted leaving Vila Cruzeiro and made an escape when one of the Core teams signaled to reduce speed. There was a chase through the streets of Olaria and the driver threw the truck against one of the vehicles, causing a collision. The vehicle ended up overturning when it accessed Avenida Brasil, at the height of the Ramos neighborhood”, detailed the police in a note.

Prison

Civil police officers managed to detain the driver and, upon checking the inside of the trunk, found hundreds of tablets of a substance similar to cocaine, packed in travel bags.

The man was arrested in flagrante delicto for the crimes of drug trafficking and association for trafficking, being taken, along with the truck and the drug, to the headquarters of Core, in the City of Police.

An inquiry will be launched to gather more information about this seizure and understand why such a large amount of cocaine is being moved from Vila Cruzeiro to other favelas this morning.

According to the agents, the cargo could be transported to other favelas belonging to the same faction, but the possibility of international drug trafficking is not ruled out.

“The apprehension represents a great financial loss for the main criminal faction operating in Rio de Janeiro, since the shipment could be worth more than R$250 million in international traffic,” said the police.
