The Civil Police of Goiás (PCGO) carried out an operation to dismantle a gang specialized in scams against rural producers and practicing tax evasion. Agents seized 468 vehicles, two aircraft, seven properties and asked for R$19 billion to be blocked.
The action took place on November 28th and 29th in the cities of Rio Verde, Morrinhos, Goiânia, Santo Antônio da Barra, Montividiu and also in the United States. In total, four people were arrested and 18 search and seizure warrants were executed.
According to the police, The grain producers who were hit suffered a total loss of R$40 million. The case gained notoriety in June, when allegations emerged that a grain broker had carried out a million-dollar scam in Rio Verde and fled the country.
Two people suspected of being part of the group are still at large. Police believe that Camila Rosa Melo and Vinicius Martini de Mello have fled to the United States.
Investigations showed that the group was involved in crimes of tax evasion, money laundering and embezzlement, among other illicit activities.
The action was called Operation Demeter, in reference to the Greek goddess of agriculture, harvest and land fertility, symbolizing the impact of crimes on rural production.
