A survey carried out by the Security Observatory Network (ROS) revealed that police kill a black person every four hours in at least 6 Brazilian states: Bahia, Ceará, Piauí, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. There were 2,653 racially registered deaths in 2020, of which 82.7% were victims of blacks or browns.
The ROS study places the police in Rio de Janeiro as the most lethal in absolute numbers, such as 939 deaths. Bahia leads proportionally, with 98% of black victims, closely followed by Pernambuco, with 97%.
The numbers make up the scenario of structural racism in Brazil, where blacks and browns are 2.6 times more likely to be murdered, represent 2/3 of all prisoners and have a life expectancy three years lower than whites.
To discuss the origins and consequences of racism in the country, Rafael Alcadipani, professor at FGV-EAESP and full member of the Brazilian Forum on Public Security, participates in this episode.
