The Public Prosecutor’s Office of São Paulo asked for a complementary expertise to investigate the case of a man being run over and killed by an app driver, in the center of São Paulo, on April 25.
The objective is to find out if the speed used by the driver Christopher Rodrigues, 27 years old, at the time of the collision that killed the street vendor Matheus Campos, was compatible with the limit of the lane or if there was any other evidence of negligence or recklessness on the part of the driver.
After the hit-and-run, the driver published a video in which he mocks the victim and says that she stole a cell phone. Christopher also said, among other things, that it would be “one less doing the L”, an allusion to the symbol of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) voters during last year’s presidential elections.
In an interview with CNN Police Chief Percival Alcântara, holder of the 5th DP (Liberdade), said that, earlier this month, the Civil Police had closed the case and indicted the application driver for manslaughter – when there is no intention to kill -, omission of help and incitement to crime.
However, according to Alcântara, due to new requests from the Public Ministry, the investigation will be resumed by the police station. Completion period is 30 days.
The delegate also informed that other military police officers who attended the case will also be heard, but the testimonies have not yet been set.
Christopher Rodrigues would have run over the street vendor after suspecting that he had stolen the cell phone of another app driver on the Júlio de Mesquita Filho viaduct, in the central region of São Paulo.
The accused remains free since, so far, there is no arrest warrant against him. According to Christopher’s lawyer, André Nino, the “defense agrees with this need to carry out new expertise, even to reinforce our thesis that there was no intent”, he explained.
