Polio vaccination campaign in Gaza completed, says Israeli Army

The Israeli army said on Wednesday (6) that humanitarian aid organizations have completed the second round of polio vaccinations for children in Gaza, administering more than 1.1 million vaccines in different areas achieving 90% coverage.

The limits of vaccination were in an area covered by a humanitarian pause in fighting, to carry out the campaign, meaning that, in northern Gaza, it was largely restricted to the region around Gaza City, according to the World Organization of Health (WHO).

The polio campaign began on September 1, after the WHO confirmed in August that a baby was partially paralyzed by the type 2 polio virus, the first such case in the territory in 25 years.

Of a total of 1,107,541 vaccinations for children in Gaza, there were 211,170 vaccinations in northern Gaza, 379,361 vaccinations in the central region and 517,070 vaccinations in the south, the military said in a statement.

Cogat, the military agency that deals with Palestinian civil affairs, has been working with international agencies to coordinate the campaign, which requires two doses of vaccine per child.

Last Tuesday (5), Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative in the Palestinian Territories, said that mass evacuations from areas in northern Gaza, where the Israeli army has been operating for more than a month, have made it difficult to estimate the number of children who might not be vaccinated in the north.

The first round of the polio vaccination campaign, which began on September 1, reached its target of 90% of children under ten years of age, according to the UN.
