Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki accuses the European Union of “imperialist behavior” towards its smaller member states in an opinion piece published today on the website of German newspaper Welt.
“Political practice has shown that the positions of Germany and France count more than all others,” Morawiecki wrote on the German news website and called for a more consensual approach to the issues.
“So we are faced with a formal democracy and de facto oligarchy, in which the strongest has power,” he said, adding that EU imperialism must be fought like Russian imperialism.
The prime minister, a member of the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party which has repeatedly clashed with Brussels over rule of law issues, said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine highlighted the EU’s weaknesses.
He called for a “deep reform that will again put the common good and equality at the forefront of the principles of the union”.
Politicians in Poland’s ruling party have said Warsaw will retaliate against the EU if the country does not receive its fair share of pandemic recovery funds.
Brussels has indicated that it is not satisfied with the latest reforms of the judicial system that Poland has undertaken.
