Polish PM warns: EU could become a centrally run institution

The Polish Prime Minister Mateusz MorawieckHe warned on Monday (18/10) in a letter to other European leaders that there was a danger that the EU would become “an organization run centrally by institutions devoid of any democratic control”.

According to Morawiecki, this is a “dangerous phenomenon that threatens the future of our union”, but, he assured, the Poland “Will remain a loyal member” The European Union. He also called on European leaders to remain “open to dialogue” on EU reform.

“I sincerely believe that together, in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding, without imposing our will on others, we can find a solution that will strengthen our European Union,” he said.

The letter was sent ahead of a European leaders’ summit this week and shortly afterwards. a ruling by the Polish Constitutional Court earlier this month challenging the primacy of Community law.

The decision is interpreted as a step towards the country’s exit from the EU

The decision has been widely criticized by other EU members, such as France and Germany, but also by Hungary. It could be, according to some analysts, a step towards Poland’s exit from the European Union.

A Polish court has ruled that certain articles of the EU treaty are “incompatible” with the Polish constitution and warned the EU court not to interfere in judicial reform in Poland.

These reforms, put into effect by the nationalist populist Law and Justice (PiS) party in Poland, have been the apple of contention between Warsaw and Brussels for years.

The EU says they are undermining the independence of the judiciary and could lead to a setback to democratic reforms, while the Polish government says they are needed to root out corruption in the judiciary.
