Politically, “there is no climate for negotiating peace” in Ukraine, according to Unifesp international relations professor Cristina Pecequilo.
In an interview with CNN Radio she pointed out that both Russians and Ukrainians show no signs “of giving way in the negotiations.”
“For them to sit at a table, they would need a foreign political motivation, not a military one”, he added.
The professor believes that China “would be the actor that the Russians would listen to”: “There is no possibility of a peace agreement or ceasefire without China, it is the great pivot that will eventually manage to bring light to the conflict.”
Before that, however, Pecequilo sees a “war of attrition without major advances.”
“We have to wait for June, with the northern hemisphere moving from spring to summer, accelerating drone strikes and the promise of a Ukrainian counter-offensive.”
However, she recalls that Western media and international analysts are already saying that the war is reaching a point of “unwinnability” by either side.
“And the civilian population is the loser,” he added.
