Britain will ban imports of Russian oil, Politico quoted Whitehall officials as saying. The official announcement is expected later today.
Politico said it would take several months for the ban to take effect so that the global market could adapt and people could stop buying gasoline because of panic.
Imports of Russian gas will not be banned at the same time, but that is something that is still being discussed by the British government, according to the report.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Monday that his government will pursue a new energy supply strategy as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent rise in prices accelerate the need for new energy sources and greater energy independence.
