In 2023, the European Union proposed a new anti -corruption directive in response to a series of scandals that shocked the bloc, such as Qatargate, the Huawei case and the Uber Files. The proposal is also aimed at tackling the recent retreat in the rule of law, as well as the fact that several EU member states have declined in the ranking of the international transparency of corruption. By highlighting how corruption continues to hit the EU, the proposed directive aims to harmonize the definition of corruption offenses and establish common penalties throughout the Union.
