Poll Bild: Angela Merkel’s mediation in Ukraine seeks 51% of Germans

51% of Germans want Angela Merkel as a mediator in the Ukrainian crisis, while 46% consider Gerhard Schroeder more suitable for the role, according to a poll by the INSA Institute on behalf of the BILD newspaper.

According to the poll, 51% believe that the former chancellor could mediate in the Ukrainian-Russian conflict, while 38% express the opposite view. Respectively, 46% of respondents would prefer the mediation of former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, with 41% disagreeing. 11% do not express an opinion on the issue.

In the same poll, however, 45% estimate that Mr. Schroeder’s pension should be cut, due to his professional activity in the Russian energy giants.

Asked by BILD if the two former chancellors could be considered suitable mediators in the current crisis, government spokesman Stephen Hampstrait said he did not disclose which channels were being used for that purpose – not even Instagram. Earlier, Mr. Schroeder’s wife, Soyon Schroeder Kim, had mentioned her husband as a possible mediator, but shortly afterwards deleted her post.

According to the same poll, 47% of Germans believe that Vladimir Putin is “the most dangerous politician of the 21st century”, while 42% believe that “he is not so dangerous”. As for Western sanctions against Russia, 25% support only diplomatic sanctions and only 7% are in favor of military sanctions. 64% of respondents, however, say they are not willing to pay higher prices due to sanctions, with 26% saying they would accept it. The Germans also strongly oppose the shipment of weapons to Ukraine. 68% support the government’s stance against the surrender of weapons, while 22% of respondents express a different view.

The government’s work in the crisis is still viewed with caution, as only 17% rate the performance of Chancellor Olaf Solz as “rather good”. Respectively, the impressions from the work of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Analena Berbok are “rather good”, 11% judge.

However, the Germans’ interest in the crisis in Ukraine is clear, as shown by the 83% who say in the survey that their issue concerns them. Only 12% say they are not interested in the Ukrainian crisis.

In terms of assessing responsibility for the crisis, 57% say Russia is primarily responsible for escalating the conflict, with 8% blaming Ukraine itself and 16% blaming Western countries. It is indicative, however, that the supporters of all political parties in their majority consider Moscow primarily responsible, except for the voters of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Left, who answer much more often that the main responsibility for the conflict lies with the West. .
