Polls close in Ecuador in election marked by candidate’s murder

The polls closed in Ecuador around 5 pm local time (7 pm GMT), marking the end of voting for this year’s elections in the country.

Voting abroad remains open, the time will be from 9 am to 7 pm (local time in the country where the voter is).

Citizens voted this Sunday (20) to choose parliamentarians and a new president for the country. More than 13 million people were eligible to vote.

The election would only take place in 2025, but it was brought forward by President Guillermo Lasso on May 17, when he decreed the so-called “crossed death”. The justification used was the serious political crisis and internal commotion.

The electoral campaign, which ended on Thursday (17), was marked by violence, with the most tragic point being the shooting of Fernando Villavicencio, one of the candidates, on August 9, less than a month before the election. .

To ensure security, the government planned a security scheme with more than 100,000 agents, including the Armed Forces and the National Police.

Candidates vote safely

Ecuador’s presidential candidates went to the polls safely.

Videos captured by Reuters show the candidates carrying out their respective votes – including Luisa González, Christian Zurita (who replaced Villavicencio) and Yaku Pérez, candidates who appear ahead in voting intentions.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) details that the time available to vote is from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, local time. As for voting abroad, the time will be from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm (local time in the country where the voter is).
