Pollution and other threats jeopardize the preservation of life in the oceans

This week, the UN held the Ocean Conference in Portugal, with the participation of delegations from 140 countries, which discussed actions to combat the damage caused by illegal fishing, the increase in the acidification of marine waters and the rise in temperatures and sea level. sea.

The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) estimates that around 10% of the world’s population depends on the fisheries and aquaculture sector for their livelihood. But the entity also points out that 34% of all marine fish stocks are fished beyond sustainable biological limits.

In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents a balance of concerns about the impacts of climate change and high levels of pollution for the preservation of life in the oceans. To describe the challenges in the search for solutions to this scenario, biologist Raquel Neves, a researcher at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Unirio), and oceanographer Joseph Harari, from USP, participate in this episode.
