Pollution in the Caribbean due to an oil spill from a Venezuelan refinery – No reaction from the country’s authorities

An oil spill has formed in the Gulf of Venezuela, off the Caribbean coast, with the oil spill attributed to the El Palito refinery, Reuters news agency reports citing well-informed sources. Biologist Eduardo Klein posted on platform X (formerly Twitter) satellite images showing an oil spill of about 225 square kilometers in the Gulf of Triste. The oil spill appears to have contaminated Morokoi National Park, known for its palm-fringed beaches and mangrove vegetation. So far there has been no reaction from state oil company PDVSA or Venezuela’s oil ministry. El Palito, with a refining capacity of 146,000 barrels of crude oil per day, is Venezuela’s smallest refinery and is located in Puerto Cabejo, Carabobo state.
