Ponta Negra Beach is closed due to drought in the Rio Negro in Manaus

Ponta Negra beach, the main seaside resort and important tourist spot in the city of Manaus, is closed to swimming as of this Tuesday (17). The safety measure was taken due to the drought affecting the state and the capital of Amazonas.

According to monitoring by the State Civil Defense, the Rio Negro reached a level of 15.77 meters today, increasing the risk of accidents such as drowning due to the proximity between the end of the perennial landfill and the natural riverbed, which may have changes such as holes, unevenness and depressions. Signs indicating the closure have already been installed at the site.

In 2013, the city government signed a Conduct Adjustment Term (TAC) with the Public Ministry of the State of Amazonas (MP-AM), with municipal and state bodies signatories to the agreement, including the Amazonas Fire Department (CBAM) and Military Police.

The TAC resulted in the adoption of rules for the use of the perennial beach that include automatic closure whenever the river reaches the 16-meter mark.

Another tourist spot in the city has also been affected by the drought. Last Monday, the State Department of Culture announced the temporary closure of the Rubber Plantation Museum . The site is located on the Igarapé São João, a tributary of the Rio Negro, in the rural area of Manaus.

The space reproduces a rubber plantation from the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, the time of the rubber cycle and a period of great economic growth in the Amazon. However, access to the Museum is only possible by river and the drought compromised the crossing, which resulted in the suspension of activities until the water level returned to normal.
