Pontoliak: Peace talks stalled as Russia has no ‘understanding’ of situation

Peace talks between Ukraine and Russia are “paused” because Moscow does not show any “understanding” of the situation, said Mikhail Pontolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and a member of the Ukrainian opposition group.

“The negotiation process is at a standstill,” he said, according to a statement from the Ukrainian presidency. “Russia is not showing a key element: understanding what is happening in the world right now and its extremely negative role,” he said, adding that “Moscow does not understand that the war is no longer going according to its rules, its timetable. or its plans “.

“The strategic goal of the Russians is all or nothing,” said Mikhail Pontoliak. Russia’s political elites are “afraid to tell the truth, that is, they must withdraw from the war under conditions completely different from those originally announced.”

The series of meetings between Ukrainian and Russian negotiators did not lead to any results. The last meeting between the heads of delegations, Vladimir Medinsky from the Russian side and David Arahamia from the Ukrainian side, took place on April 22, according to Russian news agencies.

On April 25, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Ukraine of “pretending” to be negotiating, assuring Moscow that it wanted to continue the talks.
