Pope appoints cardinal to lead Ukraine peace mission

Pope Francis has entrusted Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, archbishop of Bologna and president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, with the leadership of a peace mission to face the war in Ukraine, according to the press office of the Holy See.

The mission aims to contribute “to a relief of tensions in the conflict in Ukraine, in the hope that this can open paths of peace, something never abandoned by the Holy Father”, Matteo Bruni, director of the office, told journalists on Saturday in the statement.

The statement added that the Vatican is still investigating how and when Zuppi will carry out the mission.

At the end of April, Pope Francis visited Hungary and met with representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church in Budapest. In early May, he reunited with another member. Neither the pope nor the Vatican’s press office has provided details about the comments since then.

“There’s a mission going on right now, but it’s not public yet. When it is public, I will reveal it,” replied the pope.
