Pope Francis: Asks Cardinal Matteo Juppi to launch peacekeeping mission to Ukraine

Pope Francis has asked Cardinal Matteo Giuppi, the head of the holy synod of Italian bishops, to take on a peacekeeping mission in an effort to end the war in Ukraine, the Vatican announced.

The pontiff had spoken enigmatically about this mission while returning from his trip to Hungary last month, without elaborating.

I am willing to do what needs to be done. There is a mission now underway, but that mission is not yet public. When it becomes public, I will reveal it“, the pope had said then, speaking to journalists on the plane.

According to a Vatican diplomatic source, Jupi will try to meet separately with the presidents of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Russia Vladimir Putin. The Holy See said that the 67-year-old archbishop of Bologna will carry out this mission “to contribute to the reduction of tensions in the conflict in Ukraine, with the hope, which the Holy Father never gave up, that this could start a peace process.

In its announcement, the Vatican clarified that the details of the mission, such as when it will begin, are still being studied.
