In the Bible, the Book of Ruth addresses the compassion and love between Naomi and her daughter-in-law. In a general audience held on Wednesday (27), Pope Francis proposed reflections on biblical reading and made an appeal for men and women to better treat their mothers-in-law. When addressing his mothers-in-law, Francis also urged “care with your tongue”.
In the homily, when the priest addresses the population, Francis highlighted the commonplace existing in the kinship relations created by marriage, especially in the bonds between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.
“Today, the mother-in-law is a mythical character, the mother-in-law, I don’t say that we think of her as the devil, but we always think of her as an evil figure. But the mother-in-law is your husband’s mother, she is your wife’s mother. Let us think today of this somewhat generalized feeling that the mother-in-law, the further away she is, the better. No! She is a mother, she is elderly,” the pontiff said.
Francisco went on to highlight the importance of caring for the elderly, while also warning mothers-in-law.
“Pay attention to the relationship you have with your mothers-in-law: sometimes they are a little special, but they gave you the motherhood of your spouse, they gave you everything. At least it is necessary to make them happy, so that they can go forward with their old age with happiness. And if they have any defects, we must help them to correct themselves. Also to you, mothers-in-law, I say to you: watch your tongue, because the tongue is one of the most terrible sins of mothers-in-law.be careful”, stressed Francisco.
At the audience, the Pope invited young and old people to establish closer bonds of unity, affection and companionship.
“Please let young people talk to grandparents, let young people talk to old people, let old people talk to young people. We must restore this bridge with vigor, in it there is a current of salvation, of happiness,” she said.
