Pope Francis offered prayers this Sunday (17) for Haiti, where heavily armed gangs have taken over much of the capital and human rights groups have reported widespread killings, kidnappings and sexual violence.
Francisco said he was relieved by the news of the release of a professor and four of the six members of the Frères de Sacre Coeur Institute who were kidnapped on February 23, asking political and social actors to put personal interests aside and commit to the pursuit of the common good.
The 87-year-old pontiff also prayed for Ukraine, Palestine, South Sudan and Syria.
More than 360,000 people are internally displaced in Haiti, according to UN estimates.
With the political and public security crisis, Prime Minister Ariel Henry said he will resign, giving space for the formation of a provisional government.
However, Haiti's top gang leader has said he will not recognize this administration and that Haitians must choose their representatives.
