Pope Francis appealed on Sunday (25) for a diplomatic solution for lasting peace in Ukraine. The day before, the war entered its third year.
“So many victims, injuries, destruction, anguish and tears in a period that is becoming terribly long and whose end is not in sight. It is a war that not only devastates that region, but also triggers global waves of hatred and fear,” said Pope Francis during the Angelus prayer.
“I pray that a little humanity can be found to create the conditions for a diplomatic solution in search of a just and lasting peace,” he said.
G7 authorities promised on Saturday (24) to support Ukraine “as long as necessary”, while Western leaders traveled to Kiev in a gesture of solidarity.
Francisco said he was also concerned about the escalation of violence in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Last week, violent clashes between the DRC army and Rwanda-backed Tutsi-led M23 rebels in eastern Congo intensified, killing dozens of people and displacing hundreds of thousands of people.
“I join the bishops in their call to pray for peace, hoping for an end to the clashes and seeking genuine and constructive dialogue,” he said.
Francis reiterated his prayers for Israel, the Palestinians and the “many peoples devastated by war”.
