Pope Francis cancels his program as he has a fever and feels tired

THE Pope Francis86, has canceled all of his appointments today because he has a fever and feels tired, the Vatican announced, amid recent concerns about the Argentine pontiff’s health.

Holy See spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pope did not receive anyone in audience today, but did not specify exactly what Francis’ morning schedule was.

Two months ago the pope was hospitalized in a Rome hospital with pneumonia. He was discharged after three days in hospital after being given antibiotics. On Thursday, in an interview he gave to the Spanish-language channel Telemundo, he said that this pneumonia was treated “in time”. “If we had waited a few more hours, it could have been a lot more serious,” he admitted.

As for his knee pain, which requires him to get around in a wheelchair or with a cane, he said he’s feeling “much better.” “Some days are harder than others, like today, but that’s part of the recovery process,” he added.

In April, returning from a trip to Hungary, the pope said he plans to continue his visits abroad. He plans to go to Portugal (August 2-6) and then, in September, to Marseille and also to Mongolia.

The pope often receives representatives of religious and other organizations in the morning, in formal audiences during which he usually delivers speeches. The afternoons are dedicated to his work and private appointments. Despite his advanced age, his work rate does not slow down: sometimes he schedules up to ten morning appointments.

“The pope was tired, yesterday the day was very full, he saw a lot of people, he had the meeting (with young people) of the (educational network) Scholas Occurentes, he wanted to greet everyone. At some point, endurance falls,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s “minister of foreign affairs,” commented today.

Ton Sunday, Francis is expected to preside over the service of Pentecost.

Francis has said many times that he would consider stepping down, like his predecessor, Benedict Ist, who died in December – if his health prevented him from working, but recently said the matter was not “current”.

In 2021 the pontiff was hospitalized for ten days after undergoing colon surgery. Last January he revealed that he is suffering again from diverticulitis, an inflammation of the diverticula, small bumps in the wall of the intestine. He is closely monitored by a team of doctors, both in the Vatican and on his travels abroad, since his medical history is heavy: when he was only 21 years old he fell ill with acute pleurisy and surgeons had to remove part of his right lung.
