Pope Francis’ coffin closure ceremony will not be transmitted

Pope Francis’ coffin will be sealed on Friday afternoon (25), in the Basilica of St. Peter, in a closed ceremony for the public, which will not be transmitted either.

The forecast is that the rite will start at 15h, Brasília time, (20h local time), after the closing of the open to the faithful.

Archbishop Diego Ravelli, master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations, will command the ceremony, starting with the Latin reading of a minutes whose copy will be signed by the present clerics.

Then Ravelli will extend a white silk veil over Francisco’s face and bless him with holy water.

The archbishop will place the coins and medals coined during the pontificate in the coffin, as well as the attack containing the seal of the craft of the liturgical celebrations of the high pontiff.

Following, the zinc coffin will receive the lid where the cross, the Pope’s coat of arms, and the plate with the name of the pontiff. In it will also be recorded their life and papacy.

The coffin of Zinc will then be soldered and will receive the Camerlengo seals, the Pontifical House City Hall, the craft of the liturgical celebrations of the Pontiff and the Vatican Chapter.

After that, the wooden coffin should also be closed, on the lid will be the cross and coat of arms of Francis.

The Holy See did not report what happens on Friday night (25) until the beginning of the funeral, on Saturday morning (26).

Funeral in São Pedro Square

On Saturday, with the closed coffin, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the Cardinal College, will start the funeral celebrating the Mass of Exequias (ceremony for deceased Catholics), from 5am (Brasilia time), 10am (local time), in São Pedro Square.

Anterior papal funerals were also performed outdoors, with thousands of people following the ceremony in front of the basilica.

This will be the first day of Noveli (novenary), the nine days of mourning and prayers in honor of the Pope, in St. Peter’s Square, in front of the Basilica of St. Peter, the main Vatican.

After the ceremony, which should be attended by authorities and world leaders, the coffin will be taken back to the interior of St. Peter’s Basilica and, from there, will follow in procession to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where the burial will be held.

Closed burial

Like the coffin’s closure rite, Pope Francis’ burial will be closed to the public and will not be transmitted.

A group of poor and needy will be present in the steps leading to the place of burial to pay the last tribute to the Pontiff, following his will.

Already in the chapel, Diego Ravelli will say a new prayer in Latin, seals of the Vatican will be placed on the coffin and the coffin must be deposited in the tomb, receiving holy water then.

The notary of the Liberic Chapter wins the authentic scripture that certifies the burial and reads it to those present.

The document is then signed by the Cardinal Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, the ruler of the Pontifical House, the master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations and, finally, by the notary.
