Pope Francis expresses “his deepest sadness” in phone call with Zelensky

Pope Francis expressed “his deepest sadness” by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday, tweeted Ukraine’s embassy to the Holy See (Vatican).

“Today Pope Francis had a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Holy Father expressed his deepest regret for the tragic events that are taking place in our country,” according to the embassy.

In a tweet, Zelensky said he thanked the Pope for his prayers, adding that “the Ukrainian people feel His Holiness’s spiritual support.”

“I thanked Pope Francis for praying for peace in Ukraine and a ceasefire. The Ukrainian people feel the spiritual support of His Holiness,” Zelensky tweeted.
